About

Éli Laliberté

Where it began

Edmonton Journal article “Postcards from the edge” on CBC's Road Movies, with Éli among the eight young videographers

CBC's Road Movies crew · The Edmonton Journal (click to read)

In 1991, at just 19 years old, Éli Laliberté hit the road with a camera as one of eight young filmmakers selected from across Canada for CBC's Road Movies. Travelling the country, meeting strangers, and discovering stories along the way, he had little idea that this adventure would become the beginning of a lifelong journey in documentary filmmaking.

More than three decades later, that same curiosity still drives him.

Cambodia

Éli filming from the back of a moped in Cambodia, camera on his shoulder

A self-taught filmmaker, Éli has spent much of his life exploring the world through the people he meets and the stories they share. His work has taken him from rainforest restoration projects in Brazil to sustainable architecture initiatives in South Africa, and into communities across Canada. Along the way, he has worked as a writer, director, and cinematographer, including alongside renowned Québec documentary filmmaker Jean-Claude Labrecque, before becoming a producer at PVP Media.

Philippines

While his films often explore the environment, territory, and the social challenges of our time, Éli has always been most interested in the people behind the stories. Their relationships with the land, their struggles, their hopes, and the different ways they make sense of the world.

Xingu, Brazil — with the Kalapalo

Over the years, he has learned that the most meaningful stories begin with listening. Guided by respect, empathy, and a genuine desire to understand, he has built lasting relationships with people and communities from many walks of life.

Today

Today, Éli likes to describe himself simply as a “proud grandfather who loves to explore the things that make us human.”

He is still that same curious and passionate 19-year-old with a camera, as much in love with humanity and the planet. Only now, decades of encounters, experiences, and lessons learned have brought a certain wisdom and a deeper understanding of the world, giving him a perspective that is uniquely his own.
